Farewell to All

I have been at Chung-Ang University for 42 months, and it is time for me to say Farewell to all, as I have decided to pursue some exciting opportunities in the U.S. and Spain. Beginning in the Fall of 2014, I will become Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University.

George Mason University is an innovative, entrepreneurial institution with national distinction in a range of academic fields, and has been ranked the number one "up-and-coming" university in 2013 by U.S. News and World Report. In 2013, VSE is ranked sixth among U.S. engineering schools for return on investment (ROI) by payscale.com and affordablecollege.com. Enrollment at Mason exceeds 34,000, with students studying in over 198 degree programs. The Volgenau School of Engineering maintains close ties with the engineering community in Northern Virginia and the metropolitan Washington, DC area in both industry and government. GMU is the largest University in Virginia, within a short distance of Washington D.C. and the hundreds of companies and goverment agencies in the Virginia/DC area.

In 2015, I will also be receiving a Chair of Excellence Award from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. This award will involve collaborative research with faculty and students at UC3M in the areas of diversity and deep learning, and its application to image understanding.

For all of my students who I have had to pleasure to interact with, I wish you the best of luck and success as you move forward in your career. I hope that I have inspired a few, motivated many, and instilled a little bit of knowledge every one, along with an appreciation of the challenges that lie ahead of you.

I leave you with the following quote from William Butler Yeats, Irish Poet (1865-1939)

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

Goodluck and Farewell,

New Course in Spring of 2014

In the Spring of 2014, I will be offering a new course in Adaptive Filtering and Machine Learning. This course will be an updated version of a course in Adaptive Filters that I developed and have been teaching for many years. It will move beyond the traditional topics of Wiener and Kalman filters, the LMS algorithm, Neural Networks and Nonlinear Adaptive Systems, and look at the modern developments and applications of machines and systems that are designed to learn. Some of the new topics to be covered include:

  1. Support Vector Machines
  2. Kernel Methods
  3. Theory of Statistical Learning
  4. Generalization and the VC-Dimension

This course will me every Wednesday from 15:00-18:00. As more information becomes available on the structure and content of the course, they will be posted on the course web page.

ICASSP is Coming to Seoul in 2018!

The International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) will be held in Seoul in 2018. ICASSP is the world's largest and most comprehensive technical conference that is focused on signal processing and its applications. The series is sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society and has been held annually since 1976. The conference features world-class speakers, tutorials, exhibits, and over 120 lecture and poster sessions. ICASSP is a cooperative effort of the thirteen IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committees that include such areas as speech processing, image and video processing, acoustics, bio-imaging, signal processing for communications, machine learning, information forensics and security, and the design and implementation of signal processing systems.

Bidding for an ICASSP venue is highly competitive, and for 2018 there were seven cities that expressed an interest in bidding.  Three cities from three different countries were invited to make their presentations to the Signal Processing Society's Conference Board on May 30, 2013 and Seoul was unanimously selected to be the venue.

As the General Chair of ICASSP, I am very fortunate to have a very strong international team of people from academia and industry to work with in organizing and planing for this conference. As more information about this conference becomes available, you may find information here.
